WINDSOR-Trailing 4-2, Windsor High School crashed four home runs and went on to crown King William High School 14-4 in the first round of the Group A Region A baseball playoffs Tuesday.
The Dukes will host either Lancaster High School or Arcadia High School in the second round
Wednesday at 5 p.m. The winner will play for the regional championship on Friday. If Windsor wins, it will host the championship game.
Windsor hurler Jeff Myers surrendered a home run to King William’s Justin Shields to give the Cavaliers a 4-2 lead in the top of the fifth.
Then, Windsor exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, including a first-pitch, three-run blast over the left field fence by Tucker Hunter. The next batter, Ryan Acey, also connected for a solo shot over the centerfield fence. Later in the inning, Brett Vaughan drove in a run with a single and another run scored on an error off the hit.
Windsor poured on another five runs in the bottom of the sixth. Acey and Kyle Cobb led off the inning with back-to-back homers. Anthony Cruz cracked an RBI single, and two more runs scored on errors.
Myers (9-0) went the distance for the win, allowing seven hits (four infield hits) and striking out eight batters.
Although Windsor head coach Bruce Carroll was worried that his offense had not seen top-caliber pitching since the beginning of the season, the Dukes banged out 13 hits. Carroll said his players did not hit well early in the game but came on when they made better contact.
&uot;We didn’t hit early in the game. The kids were trying to do what they have been able to get away with up to this point. These teams are too good for that,&uot; he said. &uot;Home runs come because pitchers make mistakes, not because hitters do anything. The swings where we had the ball go out, they were just putting the ball in play.&uot;
Carroll said King William pitcher Alex Thomas struggled with getting his curveball over the plate. &uot;We were sitting on fastballs. We knew he had to throw the the fastball, and we could sit on it.&uot;
The Dukes had some trouble in the field early in the game, particularly in the fourth inning, when KW scored an unearned run on two errors.
&uot;We made some mistakes early. We are at the point now where people are going to capitalize on on that, and it cost us four runs,&uot; Carroll said.
