KING WILLIAM — King William High School scored two goals in the second overtime period to down Windsor High School 3-1 in the first round of the Group A Region A soccer playoffs Tuesday.
Windsor (9-9) trailed 1-0 in the contest all the way
up until about 20 minutes left in the game when the Dukes tied the contest on a goal by Joe Owens off an assist by Christian Daniels.
In the second five minute overtime, the Cavaliers scored and then scored again when Windsor sent everyone on offense.
Matt Burgess, Windsor head coach, said his team played a great game.
&uot;We were real excited the whole game. We had been holding them off for so long,&uot; he said. &uot;I read on a website that they were a tough team. The fact that we held them off for so long, I was impressed with my guys.&uot;
The Dukes were the number two team from the Tri-Rivers District. King William was the top school from the Tidewater District. Windsor also bowed out of the regional tournament in the first round in 2007.
Burgess said he is looking forward to next season with a good crop of players coming back.
&uot;I think next year we will be pretty respectable. We will probably continue with how we’ve done this season,&uot; he said. &uot;We have some good players on JV that we will bring up.&uot;
