Voters in Windsor and Smithfield each elected three town councilmen Tuesday night and, in both cases, dramatically altered the shape of local government.

Durwood Scott and Greg Willis ran for office in Windsor for the first time – and won –

while Councilman Clint Bryant retained his seat for a second term.

Bryant, who was the leading vote-getter with 112, is a claims representative for Virginia Farm Bureau. He and his wife, Kathy, have two sons, and they attend Tucker Swamp Baptist Church.

Scott garnered 109 votes. He has been a real estate broker since 1971 and is a member of the Windsor Ruritans, the local Masonic Lodge and, with his wife, Carolyn, is active in the Windsor Christian Church. Willis collected 99 votes to gain a seat on the council. An insurance specialist with Virginia Farm Bureau, Willis has been active in the Windsor Rescue Squad. He and his wife, Christine, have two daughters.

Danny D. Meadows collected 14 votes.

In Smithfield, David Hare was successful in his bid for re-election, while newcomers John Graham and Denise Tynes each won seats.

Councilmen James Chapman and Florine Moore did not seek re-election.

Graham was the leading vote-getter with 357 votes. He is a real estate agent and moved to Smithfield from Norfolk in 2000. He and wife, Frances, have two sons.

Hare collected 343 votes to retain his seat. He and his wife, Mary, who have lived in Smithfield for 21 years and have two daughters.

Tynes, a retired educator, got 282 votes to reach the council seat. A lifelong resident of Isle of Wight County, she has live in Smithfield for 14 years. She and her husband, Adrian, have one daughter.

Lois Haynes Tapner got 261 votes.

Nine percent of the voters in each town turned out to cast ballots.
