The eye of Hurricane Irene moved into Hampton Roads this evening, producing the storm’s highest winds yet in Western Tidewater.
Fallen trees continue to block roads throughout the region, and officials are keeping an eye on the rising Blackwater River, which could leave its banks by Monday.
Rainfall estimates ranged from 6 inches to 9 inches. Heavy rain will continue through midnight.
Emergency officials encouraged residents to stay off the roads as driving conditions remained hazardous.
