Robert M. Carroll

WAVERLY—Robert M. Carroll, 80, died April 5, 2008, at Waverly Health Care Center.
Born Sept. 1, 1927, in Isle of Wight County, he was the son of the late Harry Clay and Fannie Harrell Carroll.
Mr. Carroll served his country during WWII as a hospital orderly in the U.S. Army; was a member of Waverly Congregational Christian Church and Beaverdam Sportsman Club; and was a former member of Waverly Volunteer Fire Department.
He was an employee of Gray Lumber Co., Waverly, with 30 years of service. He retired as a mechanic from Cowling Bros., Waverly, in 1993.
He especially enjoyed looking at wildlife while riding through the countryside in his truck.
He was predeceased by a bother, Junior Carroll, and a sister, Norma Bell.
Survivors include a daughter, Gloria C. Jones and husband Billy; three sons, Robert M. Carroll Jr., David Clay Carroll and wife Patricia and Kenneth M. Carroll, all of Waverly; eight grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; four sisters, Dot Pittman of Surry, Mary Oliver of Chuckatuck, Eva Spivey of Suffolk and Lillian Whitley of Waynesboro; three brothers, Percy Carroll of Elberon, Thomas Carroll of Chesapeake and Raymond Carroll of Smithfield.
Funeral services with military honors were held Monday at Purviance Chapel, J.T. Morriss Son Funeral Home, Wakefield, with the Rev. Joy Heaton officiating.
Burial followed in Mill Swamp Baptist Church Cemetery, Ivor.
