Vernice M. Walston

SUFFOLK—Vernice Myrick Walston, of the 1100 block of Custis Road, died Jan. 29. 2008.
Mrs. Walston worked as an educator in the Hertford County, N.C. school system and retired after 47 years in education from the City of Suffolk Public School system.
After retirement, she was an adjunct professor at Paul D. Camp Community College, Suffolk. She received her undergraduate degree from North Carolina Central University and her graduate degree from the University of Virginia.
She was a member of the Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc.
Survivors include her spouse, Syvalius Walston; one daughter, Deborah Stephens-Williams of Suffolk; one granddaughter, Verniqueca A. Williams of Atlanta; one grandson, Devern S. Williams of Suffolk; four sisters, Anna Barnes of Como, N.C., Willie Mae Deloatch and Alice MacDonald, both of Suffolk and Hannah Ward (Vernon) of San Bernadino, Calif.; one brother, Heber Donald Myrick Jr. (Betty) of Como; five nieces, four nephews and two goddaughters.
She was predeceased by her parents, Heber D. Myrick Sr. and Joanna Cooper Myrick; and a son-in-law, Vernon A. Williams.
The funeral will be conducted at First Baptist Church, Mahan Street, Suffolk, today at noon by the Rev. Steven Blunt.
There will be no public viewing.
Burial will be in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens. Harris Funeral Home, Suffolk, has been entrusted with the homegoing service.
