VIRGINIA BEACH—Bishop Sullivan Catholic scored a touchdown with less than three minutes left in a Monday non-conference game to beat Isle of Wight Academy 28-21 in in the Chargers’ football season opener.

IWA Coach Dale Chapman was pleased with how the Chargers played. The game was rescheduled from Saturday due to Hurricane Irene.

“They’re in (Virginia Independent Schools) Division 2 and we are in Division 3 and (they are) ranked No. 2 among private schools,” Chapman said. “We played very well, a very physical game.”

The Chargers led 21-14 in the fourth quarter before Catholic’s Brian Novak connected with Steven Swoope on a 47-yard pass to tie with 5:36 left. Novak found Swoope again on a 35-yard pass with 2:44 left for the win.

The Charges opened scoring with Greg Chaffer scoring on a three-yard run. Catholic responded with a touchdown. IWA then scored when quarterback Ben Epps passed to Michael McGuire.

The score at the half was 14-14.

The Chargers took the lead in the third quarter on a two-yard touchdown run by Corie Wells.

IWA will host Portsmouth Christian at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 2.
