To the Editor:
My brother, Bobby (Robert B. Story III), who lives near Courtland, learned in June 2006 that he had colon cancer.
From the time of his diagnosis and the beginning of his battle he has been cared for and blessed by his fellow church members and friends around the area. Bobby, his wife, Maria, and their daughter, Anna, have been touched by the support of many.
Since the diagnosis Bobby has had four major surgeries. He has been hospitalized since late September and currently is in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
On Nov. 24, a group of friends headed by Jimmy Ricks and Larry Fowler held a “Benefit Dinner for Bobby Story” at the Southampton Ag Center. Entertainment was provided by “Shiloh Grass Band.”
Approximately 500 people participated in some way. The Story family has been overwhelmed by the efforts of the many friends who worked to make this event so successful. I am incapable of expressing adequately the appreciation we feel for all of you.
I grew up in Southampton County but have not lived there for 40 years. In my youth I believed the Southampton County area had the best people in the world and was the best place anyone could live.
Forty years later the actions of these wonderful people reinforced all of my positive thoughts.
On Nov. 24 other members of my family and
I expressed our appreciation to those we saw. We want everyone who helped to know we are deeply grateful. Bobby continues on a difficult road, but he is making progress. He could not have made it this far without the prayers, love and support of his friends.
Thank you for your ongoing display of kindness and concern. Thank you beyond words for your work and generous support exhibited by the event on Nov. 24.
