Opal D. Respass

PLYMOUTH, N.C.—Opal Dupree Respass, 87, formerly of the Long Acre community of Plymouth, died Nov. 20, 2007, at Britthaven Nursing Home in Washington, N.C.

Mrs. Respass was born in Beaufort County, N.C. on Nov. 21, 1919. She was the daughter of the late Samuel Redmond Dupree Sr. and Rosa Waters Dupree.

She was a graduate of the Pinetown Schools and Bath High School. On. Nov. 11, 1939, she married Johnnie Roscoe Respass, who preceded her in death March 30, 1988.

She was a homemaker and helped her husband who was a produce farmer. She was a member of Acre Chapel Christian Church and the Ladies Auxiliary.

‘Ms. Opal,” as she was affectionately called, was a kind woman of integrity, generosity and a loving, caring person. She had an outgoing personality who was always willing to be a friend to anyone. You are loved and will be missed.

Survivors include five sons, Johnnie Dupree Respass and wife Delores of Greer, S.C., Travis Eugene Respass and wife Elizabeth, Earnest Carson Respass and wife Anne, and Larry Roscoe Respass, all of Plymouth, and Terry Alan Respass of Newport, N.C.; two sisters, Mary Elizabeth Dupree of Williamston, N.C. and Dorothy Peggy Dupree Gibson of Franklin; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by an infant sister and three brothers, Ernest Leroy Dupree, Samuel Redmond Dupree Jr. and Charles Allen Dupree.

Tributes of honor were made by her daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Respass and her son, Larry, who spoke of his mother and read a poem “My Mom.”

A funeral service was conducted Nov. 24 in Acre Chapel Christian Church with Thelbert Leggett officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
