NEWPORT NEWS—Johnnie W. Brown Sr., 83, died Nov. 7 at Sentara CarePlex Hospital.

Mr. Brown was born in Isle of Wight County and retired from Newport News Shipbuilding after 47 years of service.

He was a loving active member of Greater Walters AME Zion Church until his health prevented him from attending.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Hershey Brown and Rosa Hines; a daughter, Chilton B. Dorsey; and a son, Johnnie W. Brown Jr.

Survivors include his wife, Lola Brown; his children, Carolyn B. Joyner (Hampton), Debra Younger (William), Diane Ashcraft and Ronnie Cook; a daughter-in-law, Julia L. Brown; two sisters, Queenie Wright (Curtis) and Bobbie Jackson; a brother, Willie Hines (Barbara); 13 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Greater Walters AME Zion Church, 658 28th St., Newport News. Burial followed at Hampton Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Greater Walters AME Zion Church.

Nicholson-Cummings Funeral Home, was in charge of arrangements.
