To the Editor:

I am writing to voice my support for Jack Stutts for the office of sheriff of Southampton County and the City of Franklin.

As many of you are aware, Sheriff Vernie W. Francis Jr. is retiring this year, leaving office after many years of successful and dedicated service to our community. Many voters are unaware, however, that the sheriff represents both the City of Franklin and Southampton County. This is an important election for both.

Jack Stutts has been a strong leader within the sheriff’s department since 1981, advancing steadily through the ranks to the position of major. He has been a patrol deputy, a detective, a supervisor, an administrator, a drug enforcement task force leader, and an all around capable member of the sheriff’s department.

I have known Jack since I came to work in the commonwealth attorney’s office 15 years ago. We work well together to accomplish our respective missions. It is a relationship based upon mutual respect and trust. Jack is honest, frugal, hardworking and brave. I am confident that he will expect no less from those working for him.

I have seen the proven results Jack is able to generate and his tireless determination to bring criminals to justice. He fully grasps the issues facing our community, which include both serious drug and gang problems.

Jack Stutts has the broad experience within the agency that will make for a smooth transition, and he has the support of many community and law enforcement leaders, including me. I urge you to support Jack Stutts for sheriff this November.
