The Tidewater News continues to get inundated with letters from writers supporting their choice of candidates for the various local elections to be decided on Nov. 6.

To quell the wave of such letters, and to try to develop a sense of fairness to all of the candidates, a deadline was set for receiving those letters. That deadline was Oct. 23.

The last letter from the vast arsenal will be published by the Nov. 2 edition.

That allows corrections to be, if necessary,

made in the Nov. 4 edition, the final edition before Election Day.

Endorsement letters have taken many shapes and forms. Some were written by former colleagues of the candidates. Others by friends. Others by civic activists. Some were clearly form letters. One was even written by a candidate’s mother.

Clearly, some of the candidates called in whatever favors they have issued over the years to get endorsements.

There are some important races being decided in less than two weeks: Some supervisors in two counties are being challenged. There are clerk of the court races in Southampton and Isle of Wight counties. There’s a sheriff’s race.

Writing letters is one form of expression. But getting out to vote is where it counts more.
