Although Franklin had a hard time containing Brandon Foster, Colonial Beach’s top running back, the Broncos’ defense was still punishing at times.

Kick returners, punt returners, running backs and quarterbacks are finding out that if a Franklin defender has a clear shot at you, you are going to pay the price. “We have a strong defense,” said Darren Parker, Franklin, head coach. “Our motto is we are a very physical team.”

-Only two passes were completed in the Colonial Beach-Franklin game Friday night, both by Franklin in the second half, for a total of seven yards. If anyone can stop Foster, Colonial Beach will have a rough time in the playoffs. Brent Steffey, the Drifters’ quarterback, attempted three passes in the first half and two were picked off. The Drifters then abandoned passing.

-Southampton High School made some lineup changes for Friday night’s victory over Warhill. One in particular was moving linebacker Anthony Boone to running back.

Boone carried the ball for the first time Friday against Warhill and

rushed 10 times for 48 yards. Boone had been playing linebacker.

-Brothers Sidney and Andre Rawls scored touchdowns for the Indians in the game against Warhill.

-Windsor head coach Bruce Carroll said his team has bounced back from difficult situations to post a 4-2 record, and guesses that adversity gives a team character. But he’s not happy to be in that situation. “We’ve got enough character,” he said.

-Speaking of Windsor, Ryan Acey might be a tough football player, as his coach says, but he’s a long way from being an easy interview. After catching the winning touchdown pass against Wahington & Lee two weeks ago, Acey was asked, “Have you ever played in an overtime game before?” His answer:

“No sir.”

“Have you ever caught the game-winning pass before?”

“No sir.”

That ain’t making ESPN’s Sportscenter anytime soon.

n Nansemond-Suffolk Academy pounded Carlisle School 51-0 Friday. Next up for Carlisle was supposed to be Southampton Academy but was almost canceled. Carlisle officials called to say they could not field a team, only to call back and say they’ll get a team on the field Friday night.

n Chowan University has installed lights at Garrison Stadium thanks to a private donation, and hopes to play some night football games next season. The team practiced under the brightest lights in Murfreesboro Monday night.

n The Tri-Rivers District cheerleading championship will be held at 7 p.m. on Oct. 22 at Franklin High School.
