ARCADIA—The Windsor Dukes ran their record to 4-2 heading into Tri-Rivers District play next week with a 38-20 win over Arcadia Friday night that again showed the Dukes’ resilient nature and determination to play hard when the going gets tough.
Windsor jumped out to a two-touchdown lead on its first two possessions, before Arcadia ran an offensive play.
Layfette Murphy scored the first touchdown on the Dukes’ first drive, and quarterback Kwamane Harris hit Chris Horne with a scoring pass for the two-point conversion to give Windsor the 8-0 lead.
The Dukes recovered a muffed kickoff and continued forward until Murphy scored again. Taury Pittman added a conversion run and the Dukes were up 16-0 early in the first half.
Arcadia cut the lead to 16-6 before Harris connected with Horne for a 40-yard touchdown score to extend the lead to 22-6. Arcadia scored again to make it not only a 22-14 halftime game but the Windsor coach unhappy.
&uot;I’m still not very pleased with the way we played in the second quarter,&uot; said Bruce Carroll.
And it almost got worse in the third quarter.
Horne intercepted a pass, but the play was nullified by a penalty that did not sit well with Carroll. What Carroll either did or said did not sit well with an official, who threw a flag on Carroll and handed Arcadia &uot;a gift,&uot; Carroll said, moving the ball half the distance to the goal, inside the 5-yard line.
But that’s when Windsor got tough, again. The Dukes held Arcadia for four plays and took over on downs. It was the second defensive stand in two week. Last week, Windsor stopped Washington & Lee’s two-point conversion attempt in overtime to secure the win.
&uot;It was a good goal-line stand,&uot; Carroll said.
After the stop against Arcadia, Windsor moved the ball 94 yards, capped by a touchdown run by Pittman. The two-point conversion was good and Windsor led 30-14.
Brooklyn Presson added the fifth touchdown, and another two-point conversion made the score 38-14.
Arcadia tacked on a touchdown for the 38-20 final score.
Windsor, its two losses coming by a combined 11 points, is starting to show its mettle and toughness.
&uot;Hopefully,&uot; said Carroll. &uot;We’re getting to the point where they think they deserve to win. Instead of folding their tents [after adversity] they’re fighting back.&uot;
But, Carroll said, the team must still play solidly for the full 48 minutes rather than digging a hole. &uot;We did not get 48 good minutes out of them,&uot; he said. &uot;We’re not good enough for that.&uot;
In a statistical oddity, Windsor allowed no kick return yardage.
The Dukes’ situation does not get easier. They play on the road at Charles City Friday, then again on the road at Sussex on Oct. 19 before playing home games against Surry and Franklin with a bye week sandwiched between.
