COURTLAND_-The celebration and blessing of marriage and Holy Eucharist for Elizabeth Thompson, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Harvey Kay Thompson to David Cooper Gibbs, son of the late Chris Onslow Gibbs and Sarah Gillette Gibbs all of Courtland, took place Dec. 29, at 6 p.m. at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Courtland.

The Revs. James W. Browder III and Edmund Pickup Jr. officiated the double-ring ceremony.

The bride, escorted by her father and given in marriage by her parents, is the maternal granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Forrest Allen Glass of Richmond and the paternal granddaughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Arlington Thompson of Deep Run, N.C.

The groom is the maternal grandson of the late Cooper Pope Gillette and Helen Francis Gillette of Capron and the paternal grandson of the late Onslow Windley Gibbs and Kathleen Thomson Gibbs of Midlothian.

The bride wore a strapless ivory satin chapel length gown, overlayed with Alencon lace, crystals and seed pearls. The Alencon lace veil she wore was previously worn by her aunts, Mrs. John Wesley Hyslop and Mrs. William Randolph Smith, both of Richmond.

She carried a cascade bouquet of cream and white roses, stephanotis, rosemary and ivy.

Amy Haley Thompson of Roanoke, sister of the bride, served as maid of honor.

Bridesmaids included Jessica Blake Gibbs of Courtland, sister of the groom, friends Hilliary Jean Deskins of Courtland, Jenny Hurst Price of Zebulon, N.C. and Katie Lynn Sutton of Chesapeake.

The bridesmaids wore champagne satin sheath gowns and carried bouquets of cream roses. Mercer Hudson Hartman of Courtland, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward L. Hartman, served as flower girl and wore an ivory satin gown with a champagne organza sash and a crown of baby’s breath.

Brett Michael Zembower of Virginia Beach, friend of the groom, served as best man. Groomsmen included Harper Allen Thompson of

Richmond, brother of the bride; Joseph Alston Edwards of Capron; cousin of the groom, and friends, Luke Abram Hardison of Windsor and Hudson Douglas Williams of Courtland.

Junior groomsman, twin brother of the flower girl, was Harvey Michael Hartman.

Nash Cooper Bangor, son of Lt. Cmdr. and Mrs. Craig Donald Bangor of Virginia Beach, served as his cousin’s ring bearer. His ivory satin suit complimented the attire of the flower girl.

Ushers were Scot Ashley Allen and Andrew Emil Ritter, both of Franklin.

Mrs. Roy Carr Duke Jr. was the mistress of ceremonies. Lectors were Mrs. Craig Donald Bangor and Mrs. William Randolph Smith. Mr. and Mrs. Steven Christopher Foy of Raleigh, N.C. were the program and guest book attendants.

Dr. and Mrs. John Wesley Hyslop were the greeters.

Carolyn Johnson Beale was organist and soloist. Club Violin of Nags Head, N.C., provided the instrumental music throughout the ceremony. Kilby’s Flower Shop and the mother of the bride provided the floral arrangements.

The reception following the ceremony was held at Cypress Cove Country Club in Franklin. Music was provided by Club Violin and Coast 2 Coast Entertainment. Mrs. Leland E. Beale Jr. supervised floral designs created by the Franklin Garden Club.

Judy Hatfield of Franklin provided the wedding cake, which was topped with ivory sweetheart roses encircled by a lace ruffle made from the wedding veil worn by the bride’s great-grandmother, Mrs. Littleberry James Haley, at her wedding in 1900.

The bride is a graduate of Southampton Academy in Courtland and earned her bachelor of arts degree in business administration from Peace College in Raleigh, N.C. She is the office manager for her father’s dental practice in Franklin.

The groom is also a graduate of Southampton Academy in Courtland and will be graduating in May with a bachelor of science degree in health and physical education from Old Dominion University in Norfolk.

The couple resides in Courtland.

Parties

On Sept. 22, Amy Haley Thompson hosted the bridal party and other attendants with a luncheon at Olive Garden in Norfolk.

The bride and groom were honored with an engagement cocktail buffet party later that evening at the Pace House in Franklin, which was hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Arthur P. Rawlings, Mr. and Mrs. Robert H. Pope and Mr. and Mrs. Jerry D. Rose.

On Oct. 13, Hilliary Jean Deskins, Jenny Hurst Price and Katie Lynn Sutton hosted a miscellaneous shower for the bride at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Courtland.

A cocktail party was given for the couple on Oct. 27 in the home of Lt. Cmdr. and Mrs. Craig Donald Bangor of Virginia Beach and was hosted by Lt. Cmdr. and Mrs. Bangor, Joseph Alston Edwards, Mr. and Mrs. Steven Christopher Foy and Mr. and Mrs. Wade Anthony Smith.

Carolyn Johnson Beale hosted a tea for the bride in her home on Nov. 3.

Pat L. Carpenito, Mrs. Harvey G. Pope and Mr. and Mrs. Edward L. Hartman entertained the couple with a barbecue dinner at the Southern Sisters in Courtland with bluegrass music provided by Ed Canada, Mo Canada and George Atkins.

On Nov. 24, Mr. and Mrs. Roy C. Duke Jr., Mr. and Mrs. Leland Beale Jr. and Mr. and Mrs. Donald L. Simmons honored the bride and groom at a cocktail buffet in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Roy C. Duke Jr.

On Dec. 16 Mr. and Mrs. Stephen F. McCormick of Midlothian hosted a family luncheon for the couple in their home along with Mrs. John T. Rice of Staunton and Mrs. Theordore Revis of Hillsborough, N.C.

Ann Ashby-Babb of Courtland, Mrs. Michael J. Munn of Raleigh, N.C. and Mrs. William J. Keene Jr. of Blacksburg hosted a bridesmaid’s luncheon in Ann Ashby-Babb’s home on Dec. 28, at which time the bride presented her attendants with gifts.

After the rehearsal, the groom’s parents entertained the wedding party and out-of- town guests at a dinner at Phinn’s Restaurant in Franklin, at which time the groom presented his attendants with gifts.

Following the rehearsal dinner, Scot Ashley Allen, Dr. Harvey Kay Thompson, Harper Allen Thompson and Robert K. Magette hosted an oyster roast for the men at the new home of the bride and groom.

A post wedding brunch was held Dec. 30 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Stafford V. Camp III in Courtland and was hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Camp, Dr. and Mrs. John Wesley Hyslop and Mr. and Mrs. William Randolph Smith.
