Chargers claim road tilt with Fuqua

FARMVILLE – Isle of Wight Academy continues to roll. The Chargers gained 370 yards total offense on their way to a 29-14 win over previously unbeaten Fuqua School in a Virginia Commonwealth Conference football tilt Friday night.

The Chargers (5-0) opened the game with a 22-0 cushion. After a scoreless first quarter, IWA’s Rusty Brake scored on a 45-yard run halfway through the second quarter. Cody Dowdy’s kick failed and the score stayed at 6-0.

Later in the quarter, Brake found Kevin King on a 7-yard touchdown pass. Brake then tossed to J.D. Honeycutt for the 2-point conversion and the 15-0 lead.

The Chargers opened the third quarter with a score on a 1-yard run by Brake. Dowdy’s kick made it 22-0.

Fuqua finally got on the board when Thomas Maxey rushed three yards for a touchdown and Logan Spangler booted the extra point.

IWA answered with its final score, a 25-yard pass from Brake to King and a two-point conversion pass from Brake to Moore for a 29-7 lead.

Fuqua scored a late touchdown, again on a 3-yard run by Maxey.

Brake finished the game with 43 yards on the ground and 43 yards through the air on 4-for-6 passing. Honeycutt led the IWA rushing attack with 92 yards on 13 carries.

IWA head coach Dale Chapman said his team knew Fuqua would be a tough battle.

&uot;We knew it would be tight in that hostile environment,&uot; he said. &uot;I was happy with the performance considering being on the road with all the hoopla.&uot;

The Chargers play at Broadwater Academy on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. Broadwater is also undefeated.
