ISLE OF WIGHT-Friday night was pretty much the same story as it has been all year for Isle of Wight Academy. This week it was Brunswick Academy that was the victim.

The Chargers rolled up 323 yards with the starters playing just two quarters and crushed the Vikings 41-3 in a Virginia Commonwealth Conference football game Friday night.

IWA’s opening drive was just a microcosm of the rest of the contest.

Starting with the ball on their own 47, the Chargers’ Rusty Brake ran 15 yards, J.D. Honeycutt ran 31 yards, and Brake hit Kevin King with a seven-yard touchdown pass with less than two minutes gone in the game.

After Brunswick went three and out, The IWA blitzkrieg showed up again, reeling off big chunks of real estate. At the 4:32 mark, Brake ran it in from four yards and then passed to Kenneth Corbett for the two-point conversion and a 14-0 lead.

Again, the IWA defense held Bruwnswick to three plays. On the punt, King fielded

the ball and bolted 70 yards down to the Brunswick 1. On the next play, Brake scored and the extra point kick by Cody Dowdy made it 21-0 with 10 minutes gone in the game.

Isle of Wight head coach Dale Chapman took Brake and several other starters out of the game to start the second quarter and went to third-string quarterback Zack Lamb, who had never taken a snap in a regular season game.

Second-string quarterback Daniel Brown broke his ankle last week against Kenston Forest. Lamb looked like a seasoned veteran, driving the Chargers 67 yards on seven plays, including a 12-yard pass to John Hibbard. The drive ended when Ryan Quesinberry scored from two yards out with 8:59 to play in the half for a 28-0 lead.

The Chargers (4-0) added one more score with 3:10 left in the half when Heath Price crossed the goal line on a one-yard run. Dowdy’s extra point made it 35-0.

With a 35-0 lead at the half, the teams played with a running clock in the second half. Brunswick’s only score came on a 27-yard field goal with seven seconds left to play in the game.

Brake led the Chargers in rushing with 76 yards on four carries. Price rushed for 67 yards on seven carries and Honeycutt added 54 yards on five carries.

IWA heads into the toughest part of its schedule with a road game at Fuqua School next Friday and a road matchup with Broadwater Academy on Oct. 6. Chapman was concerned that his starters played just half a game against Brunswick.

&uot;I was a little bit uneasy not playing my starters more than just the first and third quarters,&uot; he said. &uot;We are going to do everything we can do to be ready, and I think they've got the heart. I just preached to them that just make sure you have the heart, because we have the toughest part of our schedule coming up.&uot;
