SUFFOLK-Two Norfolk Collegiate penalty corners were the difference Tuesday afternoon as the Lady Oaks scored one goal on each side of halftime to defeat Nansemond-Suffolk Academy 2-0 in a non-conference field hockey contest.

The match started in back-and-forth fashion with neither side putting a shot on goal through the first 15 minutes. As the first half wore on, NC kept the Lady Saints pinned down more and more in their own end and that pressure paid off with shots on Sarah Daniel’s goal and an increasing number of NC penalty corners.

NSA successfully defended the corners, six to be exact, until late in the period when NC executed a corner nicely with a hard shot from the left side of the NSA arc getting tapped in right at the far post to give NC a 1-0 lead with 1:02 left in the half.

NSA turned the match around in many ways after the half. The Lady Saints had a 10-6 advantage in shots and put five shots on goal.

NSA’s pressure around the NC goal also led to a 7-2 advantage in corners, but it would be one of the two corners for the opponent that was the final turning point.

With less than nine minutes remaining, Daniel saved the first two shots off an NC corner. With a scramble still going just a couple yards from the goal, the third shot found the back of the cage to put NC up 2-0. Daniel played all 60 minutes in goal and finished with eight saves.
