FRANKLIN—Each year, the Franklin Mustang Football League holds a fund-raiser to cover the league’s operating expenses. This year’s fund-raiser will benefit more than just the league.

Rob Carter, who is in his last season as coach of the Franklin team after 23 years, said this year’s fund-raiser will also include money to begin a college scholarship in memory of Luke Drewry, one of the Boy Scouts who was killed in a traffic accident last fall at Sebrell. Drewry played three seasons under Carter.

The fried chicken plate fund-raiser will be held at the National Guard Armory in Franklin on Aug. 23 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and again from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Plates, which will be prepared by the Filling Station of Robersonville, N.C., will be $7.

Carter said once the league makes its operating goal, the rest of the profit will be placed in a certificate of deposit and will grow until Luke’s class, the Class of 2012, is ready to graduate. Then, a memorial scholarship will be given to a teammate with whom he would have graduated.

&uot;We’ll go over the list of kids and have a committee to pick one. There will be criteria set up,&uot; Carter said. &uot;I feel like that’s the right thing to do.&uot;

Carter said he will donate the first $50 to the scholarship fund and hopes that businesses and other people will match that.

&uot;We will have a donation bucket there specifically for that. I hope the former players, and the parents who have a child involved in the program, will come out and purchase a dinner. I feel like this will be a very successful day.&uot;

The Mustang Football League, which has six teams, is for players ages 10 to 13. The regular season starts the last Thursday night in September and continues through the first week of November.

&uot;This is a good feeder program for Franklin High School,&uot; Carter said. &uot;What we have sent to them in the last four years, they should have some good football players up there.&uot;
