Joseph L. Scott

SUFFOLK—Master Sergeant Joseph Leon Scott, 68, of the 1200 block of Whitemarsh Road, died July 21, 2007 at Sentara Obici Hospital.
He was born in Nansemond County to the late Clinton Scott and Dorothy Scott. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Bertha A. Scott; step-father, Robert “Bud” Cherry; and a sister, Edith M. White.
Mr. Scott was a graduate of East Suffolk High School and received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Richmond. He also attended Morgan State University and Norfolk State University.
He retired as a Master Sergeant with the U.S. Army Reserve after 22 years of service. He was a part-time employee at Tidewater Wholesalers.
Survivors include his wife, Velvet Harry-Scott of the home; two daughters, Sandra Colbert (Wesley) and Terry Diggs of Suffolk; two stepdaughters, Lakeisha Harry and Sumiko Harry of Suffolk; one son, Darrell Sugars of Hampton; two stepsons, Ahmad Harry (Monya) of Smithfield and Jeremie Harry of Suffolk; stepmother, Athalia Robinson of Suffolk; two sisters, Sharon J. Jones-Eaton (Kerry) of Suffolk and Evelyn Scott of New York City; two brothers, Willie Floyd Gary (Ellen) of Suffolk and Ted Scott of New York City; two uncles, the Rev. Ajax Scott and Tom Scott; six grandchildren, Angelica Scott, Jammia Diggs, and Keona Diggs, Derrick Eure, Jon Quil Baker, and Jon Treil Baker, all of Suffolk; a host of great grandchildren, and nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
The funeral service was held Wednesday at Sixth Street Baptist Church, 324 Goodman Street, by Dr. James E. Williams and Elder Archie Timmons.
Interment was in the Albert G. Horton Memorial Veterans Cemetery.
