Whose luck is it anyway?

For the superstitious, this has been an interesting seven-day stretch.
It started on Saturday, July 7. The date was 7-7-07. All sevens, considered a lucky number for those who believe in such things.
Today is Friday the 13th, one of the unluckiest days for that same group of people.
But luck is a moving target.
One dictionary defines luck as &uot;the fortuitous happening of fortunate or adverse events.&uot;
People can be in luck, out of luck, lucky at love, down on one’s luck, trying one’s luck.
Ralph Waldo Emerson, a great thinker and philosopher, once said, &uot;shallow men believe in luck. Strong men believe in cause and effect.&uot;
Jean Cocteau, a poet and novelist, wrote: &uot;We must believe in luck. For how else can we explain the success of those we don’t like?&uot;
Dr. Armand Hammer, an industrialist and art collector (named after the Arm and Hammer of the Socialist Party. How lucky is that?) was quoted, &uot;When I work 14 hours a day, seven days a week, I get lucky.&uot;
But we think this much is clear to the believers: Today should be as unlucky as Saturday was lucky.
