Edward M. Kinney Sr.

CARRSVILLE—Edward Martin Kinney Sr., 83, of the Village at Woods Edge died June 10, 2007 in Courtland Health Care Center.
A native of Atchison, Kan., Mr. Kinney was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Martha Rose Kinney and a son-in-law, Larry Ferguson.
Mr. Kinney worked for 35 years for the Maintenance Department of Union Camp Corporation until he retired in 1986, but continued to operate Kinney Tool Sharpening Service for 20 years.
Mr. and Mrs. Kinney enjoyed traveling around the USA, their favorite destination being Myrtle Beach, S.C. A Navy veteran of World War II, he attended radio school in Jacksonville, Fla.; met Martha while stationed at the Naval Auxiliary Air Station in Franklin Field; and served at the Naval Air Station, Patuxent River, Md.
Very active in district and council scouting functions, he was instrumental in starting Scout Troop No. 37, served there for 20 years, 10 of those years as scout master; was a vigil member of the Order of the Arrow; and received the Silver Beaver Award. He was a member of the Carrsville Ruritan Club since 1949 and held a 50-year perfect attendance record. He served two terms as president and also served as secretary and treasurer.
He was instrumental in starting the Annual Shrimp Feast for the club. He served as zone governor and three different terms as treasurer of Zone 5 (Holland District Ruritans).
He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Carrsville Community Center and a charter member of the Carrsville Volunteer Fire Department where he was secretary for six years.
He was an active member of Beaver Dam Baptist Church where he had served as president of the Adult Men’s Bible Class, the United Paperworkers International Union, Local 505, American Legion Post 73, and the Franklin Masonic Lodge No. 151.
Survivors include a daughter, Joyce K. Ferguson of Myerstown, Pa.; a son, Edward M. Kinney Jr. and wife Karen of Courtland; three brothers, A.B., Bill and Calvin Kinney; four grandchildren, Wendy F. Gilbert of Limerick, Pa., Carla F. Villatoro of Edgewater, N.J., Elliott Kinney of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Joshua Kinney of Richmond; and two great-grandsons, Derek Gilbert and Hudson Villatoro.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. today in Beaver Dam Baptist Church by Dr. Richard Peerey. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church the hour before the service.
