COURTLAND—Southampton High School lost a 20-19 homecoming heartbreaker on Friday night after a missed extra point that would’ve tied up the game was followed by an interception on Greensville’s 1-yard line.

Late in the fourth quarter, Southampton’s Karon Evans caught a 10-yard pass at the 15-yard line, turned around and tossed at lateral to Jaron White, who scored on the run. The Indians were down 20-19 when freshman kicker Russell Ballance, who has gone 14-for-15 on the season with extra points, had his kick blocked.

Southampton followed by recovering the onside kick with 2:59 left in the quarter. The Indians got the ball to Greensville’s 18-yard line. Quarterback Mason Wright threw the ball, which was intercepted on the one-yard line.

The game was Southampton’s Southside District opener.

Southampton scored first in the game on a 40-yard run by Saiquan Mason. Ballance’s extra point was good with 2:51 remaining in the half.

Greensville opened scoring in the third quarter on 48-yard touchdown pass; the two-point conversion was good with 3:29 left in the quarter.

With an 8-7 lead, Greensville scored again on a 35-yard run. The pass for the conversion failed.

On the kickoff, Southampton’s Jerry Wright returned the ball for a 75-yard touchdown run. Wright’s pass for the two points was intercepted.

Greensville led 14-13 and returned the kickoff for 70 yards to Southampton’s 17-yard line. Greensville scored on a pass. The conversion failed.

Mason led rushing for Southampton with 28 carries for 134 yards and one touchdown. White carried the ball 15 times for 51 yards. Total yards rushing were 206 yards.

Wright went 3-for-12 for 27 yards passing, one touchdown and two interceptions.

Southampton had 18 penalties for 210 yards. Greensville had 11 penalties for 95 yards.
