Elizabeth Chandler Allen Hotchkiss, 52, passed away July 2, 2010 at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Chandler fought a courageous battle with cancer with style and grace. She was born on Oct. 18, 1957 in Richmond, Va., a daughter of the late Elizabeth Gwaltney Allen and Philemon Macon Allen Jr. As president of the Southampton Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, Mrs. Hotchkiss was instrumental in the installation of the first digital mammogram machine. She was a member of the Franklin Garden Club and The Emmanuel Episcopal Church. At the church she served on the Altar Guild, ECW and the Vestry. Survivors include her husband of 29 years, Carter Walker Hotchkiss; daughter, Margaret Walker (Peggy) Hotchkiss of Charleston, S.C.; son, Allen Craigie Hotchkiss of Franklin; sister, Margaret Allen Vinson and husband Stephen of Jamestown, N.C.; uncle, William C. Ross of Pacolet, S.C.; and many cousins. A memorial service celebrating the life of Elizabeth Chandler Allen Hotchkiss will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 6, at The Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 400 N. High St., Franklin, VA 23851. The Revs. Edmund Pickup and Ben R. Duffey will officiate. A reception will follow the service at the Pace House Inn, 800 W. 2nd Ave, Franklin, VA 23851.
