COURTLAND-Second graders in Southampton County schools and Southampton Academy spent a day on the farm Thursday during the Chowan Basin Soil and Water Conservation District’s annual Farm Day event.
Flaggy Run Farm hosted the event that featured presentations on all aspects of farm life including: forest products, pumpkins, farm animals, crops, beef, farm equipment, wildlife, water quality, ATV safety and soils, said Stacy Bradshaw, district manager of the Chowan Basin Soil and Water Conservation District.
“Each station was 12 minutes long and each presenter shared facts that relate back to Virginia’s SOL tests,” Bradshaw said.
The purpose of the event was to help students understand where their food and fiber comes from.
“It doesn’t just come from the grocery store,” Bradshaw said. “It’s grown on a farm.”
The event was presented by agency partners including: Virginia Cooperative extension, Natural Resource Conservation Service, Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, Farm Bureau, the Southampton County Farm Bureau Women’s Committee, Appomattox River Soil and Water Conservation District, Virginia Dare Soil and Water Conservation District and the Virginia Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts.
Bradshaw said the district hosts a Farm Day annually in Southampton County and this year was the second straight year it was hosted by Flaggy Run Farm owners Jamie and Sherry Lee.
