WINDSOR—Senior running back R.J. Edwards racked up 221 yards on the ground to help Windsor crush the Cougars of Surry County High School 50-28 on homecoming night.
“Our guys ran well and our line did a heck of a job,” said Windsor Coach Chuck Parrish. “It’s always nice to get a win on homecoming.”
The Cougar offense had the Duke defense on its heels early, taking a 6-0 lead on a 56-yard touchdown strike from Timothy Thomas to Reggie Diggs with 10:31 left in the first quarter.
Edwards scored Windsor’s first three touchdowns of the game. The first came at the 7:33 mark of the first quarter on the Dukes’ opening possession.
The nine-yard jaunt by Edwards and his two-point conversion put the Dukes up 8-6.
After the Windsor defense forced a three-and-out on the ensuing drive, the offense started its drive at the WHS 45-yard line. The drive lasted 10 plays and took 6:20 off the clock. It culminated with a two-yard touchdown run by Edwards. A pass from Justice Chapman to Josh Edwards converted the two-point play and put the Dukes up 16-6 with 1:13 left in first quarter.
Surry was forced to punt with 11 seconds left in the first quarter after another three-and-out by the Duke defense.
Edwards scored again on the ensuing drive. This time he reached pay dirt from four yards out and Sharod Peterson converted the two-point play to put Windsor up 24-6 with 10:04 left in the first half.
Surry was forced to punt again after Thomas missed on three straight passes.
The Dukes took over at their own 26-yard line and used three different backs to run the ball during an 18-play drive that took up 8:50. Chapman scored from five yards out, but the conversion failed. The Dukes led 30-6 with 36 seconds left in first half.
Surry got as close as 36-22 in the second half, but the home team was never seriously threatened.
A 5-yard touchdown run by Oris Bowers and a 2-yard scoring run by Chapman after a 45-yard interception return by Thomas Austin put the game away for the Dukes.
Bowers had 70 yards on 13 carries for Windsor, which improved to 6-3 overall and 2-1 in the Tri-Rivers District. The Dukes have a bye next week before district foe Franklin visits on Friday, Nov. 4, which will be Senior Night in Windsor.
“They’ll be tough,” Parrish said of Franklin. “It’ll be a good game.”
