Marvin W. Williams Jr.
FOLKSTON, Ga.— Marvin Wharton “Cookie” Williams Jr., 80, died Nov. 5, 2009, in Jacksonville, Fla., following a lengthy illness.
He was born in Wallace, N.C. to the late Marvin Wharton Williams Sr. and Nelle Bryant Colwell Williams.
Mr. Williams retired as a Regional Saw Mill Manager from Union Camp Corporation.
He served on the Charlton County Chamber of Commerce, the Charlton County Fire Board, and on the Folkston City Council for a number of years.
He was twice elected Charlton County Citizen of the Year. His lifelong passion as a Professional Train Watcher (PTW) led to the development of the Folkston Funnel which impacted tourism for Charlton County.
He served as chairman for the Folkston Railroad Transportation Museum which houses a large portion of his train memorabilia. He was a member of the Folkston United Methodist Church where he served faithfully in many positions.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Georgia Williams; three children, Susan (Neil) Burgess, Ann (Dale) Taylor and George (Cindy) Williams; four grandchildren, Gregory (Kim) Burgess, Amanda (Phil) Taylor, Chandler (Brandi) Taylor, and Karl Williams; four great-grandchildren, Jack Taylor, Bryce Taylor, Hugh Taylor and Brogan Taylor; and a father-in-law, George Steinbach, and a number of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Billy Williams and a sister, Bootie Gwaltney.
Funeral services were held Nov. 8 at the Folkston United Methodist Church at 3:00 PM with Rev. Dave Willette officiating. Burial will follow in Pineview Cemetery.
