Kathryn T. Dunlap
ZUNI—Kathryn T. Dunlap, 58, died at her home with her family at her side, after a courageous battle with cancer.
She was an exceptional educator and teacher for 37 years, teaching children English, history, literature, and reading, and also special needs children.
She was also principal of Virginia Country Day School for many years.
The past five years, she taught at J. P. King Middle School in Franklin, where she was voted “Teacher of the Year” in 2006.
She is survived her husband, Cecil John Dunlap; sons, Christopher and Shawn; dearest confidant, Danna Ballassai; parents, Frank and Elsie Mello of Delray Beach, Fla.; sister, Roberta Martin and husband William; brother, Dr. Michael Mello and wife Dr. Pamela McKnight; three nieces, Elizabeth Mello, Juliana Mello and Caroline Mello; three nephews, Patrick Bagana, Alexander Martin, and Andrew Mello, all of South Dartmouth, Maine; and hundreds of students and teachers whose lives she touched daily.
A memorial service will be held at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. Jude’s Catholic Church, Franklin.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Kathryn T. Dunlap Memorial Fund, c/o Shawn Dunlap, Suntrust Bank, 117 W. Second Ave, Franklin, VA 23851.
