NEWSOMS—Gary Dean Saffell, 65, died Sept. 1, 2009, in Richmond.
He was born in Allentown, Pa., a son of the late Marion Heist and Virgil Dean Saffell.
Mr. Saffell was predeceased by a sister, Joanne Solga and a brother Billy Saffell.
He was a member of the Franklin Church of God. He was a retired 27 year Chief Warrant Officer from the U.S. Navy.
He served in the following duty stations; 1. Great Lakes, Ill.; 2. Nattu Naval Base, Philadelphia, PA; 3. NAS, Johnsonville, PA; 4. N.A.F. Warminster, PA; 5. USS Guam “LPH-9; 6. USS Randolph “CVS 15”; 7. Helsuppron Six, NAS, Norfolk “HC-6”; 8. Class C School, NTC, Great Lakes, Ill; 9. R. T. C., Great Lakes, Ill; 10. USS Independence “CVA 62”; 11. NATTC, Lake Hurst, NJ; 12. USS John F. Kennedy, “CV 67”; 13. COM NAV AIR LANT, Code 334; 14. Aviation Schools Command, Pensacola, FL; 15. USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, “CVN 69”.
Survivors include his wife, Carol Dutkieticz Saffell; three daughters, Pattie Barnette of Chesapeake, Connie Lafferty of Rocky Mount, N.C. and Danielle Saffell of Chesapeake; one son, Gary Saffell of Hyde, N.C.; two sisters, Sheri Krynack of Bath, Pa. and Susie Saffell of Allentown, Pa.; 12 grandchildren, Jeremiah, Amanda, Levi, Tommy, Timothy, Matthew, Teri, Ericka, Jessica, Amber, Kathleen, Jonathan; and two great-grandchildren, Mariah and Ava.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at the Franklin Church of God with the Rev. James Ashby officiating.
Interment, with military honors, will follow at Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk.
The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the American Lung Association, P.O. Box 35010, Richmond, Va. 23235.
