SUFFOLK—Juanita B. Hicks, died Aug. 25, 2009, at Nansemond Pointe Rehabiliation and Healthcare Center.
She was born in Suffolk to the late Alphonso and Gladys Batchelor.
She married Harvey Hicks and to this union were born two daughters, Sheryl Hicks Short (deceased) and Marsha Hicks Bishop.
She was educated in the Suffolk Public Schools and did further studies at Norfolk State College and the Sentara Obici School of Nursing.
Mrs. Hicks was employed by the Planters Peanut Co. and the Southampton County Health Department in Courtland from which she retired as a Home Health Care Nurse.
She accepted Christ at an early age and was a dedicated member of the East End Baptist Church. She followed the philosophy of Christ in that she sought not to be served, but to serve. She was always willing to lend a helping hand to a friend, a family member or one in need.
She was involved in several ministries at her church. She was a member of the music ministry and the Voices of Praise Adult Choir, Food Ministry for funerals, Senior Adult Ministry, Senior Women’s Sharing Group, Sunday School Ministry and Bible Class No. 2. She was also a former leader of the East End Girl Scout Troop.
Her community affiliations included a volunteer for the Louise Obici Meals On Wheels and a member of the Board of Directors for the Crocker Funeral Home, Inc.
Survivors include her husband, Harvey Hicks; one daughter, Marsha H. Bishop; one son-in-law, Charles C. Bishop and one granddaughter, Heather R. Bishop all of Southfield, Mich.; one goddaughter, Pamela Jones-Watford; several cousins and a host of friends.
A funeral service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Metropolitan Baptist Church, 125 County St., Suffolk with the Rev. Dr. Mark C. Croston officiating, Interment will be in Carver Memorial Cemetery.
