DINWIDDIE—Richard L. Vaughn, 78, died Aug. 21, 2009, after an extended battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
He was a devoted husband, loving father and friend to everyone he met.
Mr. Vaughn was born and raised in Lynchburg, served in the Army during the Korean War, received his B.S. degree from Lynchburg College, and earned his doctorate degree in education from U.Va.
He worked in the Lynchburg public school system and served as superintendent of schools in Franklin prior to settling down in Dinwiddie.
It was here he truly found his niche as superintendent of Dinwiddie County Public Schools until retiring in 1993.
He was passionate about education and cherished the relationships built along the way.
Survivors include his wife, Karen of Dinwiddie; son, Richard and wife Katie of Dinwiddie; son, Christopher and wife Lisa, and three grandchildren of Chesapeake; sister-in-law, Ladora Vaughn of Georgia; nephew, Henry Vaughn and wife Sandra of North Carolina; niece, Betsy Maness and husband Michael of Georgia; nephew, Curtis Garner and wife Stuart of Alabama; nephew, Patrick Garner and wife Debbie of Illinois, and John and Carol Gordon of Georgia.
The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. today at the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home & Cremation Service.
