Samuel Brown Jr.
NORFOLK—Samuel Brown Jr., 86, died Aug. 10, 2009.
He was born Saturday, Nov. 6, 1922, in North Carolina, to the late Samuel and Mamie Brown.
He was predeceased by his wife, Pearlean O. Fuller Brown; one grandson, Claude J. Skinner; one great- grandson, Kendall Johnson; and a brother, William L. Brown.
He was educated in Tarboro, N.C., public schools.
Mr. Brown joined the U.S. Army and was a World War II veteran.
Upon leaving the Armed Forces, he moved to Norfolk, where he became a cook for several local Jewish restaurants and hotels.
Later, he became an assistant maintenance supervisor for Royal Mace Apartments. He also worked for Murray’s Foods as an assistant manager.
He accepted Jesus Christ as his Saviour and became a member of St. Thomas AME Church.
He loved to cook, play dominoes, and just being around family and friends. Samuel was a loving and caring person.
He loved his entire family and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Survivors include a daughter, Frances C. Skinner (Charles Powell) of Norfolk; two sons, Claude J. Brooms Jr. (Angela) of Georgia and Larry Brooms of Norfolk; five grandchildren, Lavern O. Skinner of Norfolk, Treza Johnson (Eddie) of Georgia, Carletta Perry (Troy) of Franklin, Va., Waverly L. Skinner of Norfolk, and Marcus Brooms of Georgia; four great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Flossie Branchcomb (Charles) and Anne Walker, both of Chesapeake; one brother-in-law, Earl Fuller of Norfolk; three special cousins, Jetta Knight, Rudolph Knight and Leroy Howard, all of Tarboro; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
A funeral was held Tuesday in St. Thomas AME Church, Norfolk, by the Rev. Joseph Lamb.
Burial was in Woodlawn Memorial Park, Norfolk.
