GATESVILLE, N.C.—Gracie Arlene (Arline) Lewis, 67, died June 19, 2009, at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie, N.C.
She was born July 15, 1941, in Gates County, N.C., daughter of the late Thomas and Annie Sarah (Stallings) Arline.
She was preceded in death by her brother Herbert Leon Arline and stepson Austin Tyrone Jenkins.
Mrs. Lewis worked at Southampton Memorial Hospital in Franklin, Saint Mary’s Hospital in Waterbury, Conn. and Gatesville Elementary School. She retired in 2007.
She was a member of Walton Grove AME Zion Church having served as a deaconess.
Survivors include her husband of 41 years, Arthur Lee Lewis, associate minister of Walton Grove AME Zion Church, Hobbsville, N.C.; two sons, George Ralph Arline (Carmen) of New Haven, Conn., and Joseph Lee Brown of Newland, N.C.; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; three sisters, Edith Mae Arline and Mary Francis Walter (Leroy) of Waterbury and Lois Jean Privott (Jeffrey) of Camp Lejeune, N.C.; three brothers, William Thomas Arline and Wallace Melvin Arline of Waterbury and Richard Earl Arline (Mamie) of Somerset, N.J.; two brothers-in-law, John H. Lewis Jr. (Dyanne) of Franklin and Anthony Lewis (Alyson) of Middletown, Conn.; four sisters-in-law, Delores Wiggins (William) of Wake Forest, N.C., Jacqueline Sessoms (Booker T.) of Newport News, Sue Lowe (Carlton) of Franklin and Sylvia Thourogood (Olanda) of Virginia Beach; three aunts, many nieces and nephews, along with a host of friends.
