WAKEFIELD—Carrie Gay, 89, died June 3, 2009, at Southside Regional Medical Center in Petersburg.
She was a lifelong member of Mars Hill AME Zion Church, where she was recognized as the oldest living member.
She served on the missions board, was a pastor’s aide, and an usher during her years of service.
Mrs. Gay was a former employee of Columbian Peanut Factory in Wakefield.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Florence Roberts; husband, Joe S. Gay; son, James R. Gay, formerly of Williamsburg; and brothers, Hayden Roberts, James Roberts, Walter Roberts and Bobby Lee Roberts.
Survivors include her grandchildren, Darnel Gay of Washington, D.C., Gwen Mason and great-grandson, Jonathan Mason of Newport News; a devoted niece, Joyce Holmes (Dennis) of Dendron; a sister, Ella Roberts, a host of other relatives and friends.
A celebration of her life will be held at 1 p.m. today at Mars Hill AME Zion Church, Wakefield, officiated by the Rev. Benjamin Petway.
Burial will follow at Booker T. Memorial Cemetery in Wakefield.
Peace-Bland Funeral Home, Waverly, is in charge of arrangements.
