COURTLAND—Thursday’s only season loss for Southampton High School’s volleyball team ended the Lady Indians’ chances at qualifying for the state tournament.

Southampton and visiting Chancellor both went into the second round of the region tournament 18-0. The Lady Indians won the first set and then dropped three to the Lady Chargers.

A win would’ve promised the girls a spot in the state tourney; the loss meant the end of a perfect season — something no Southampton team has apparently done since the 1970s.

“I tried to research it and found a softball team in the ‘70s that had a perfect season,” said Coach Chad Brock.

This season was also the first time for a Southampton volleyball team to win a district title and a regional match, Brock said.

During Thursday’s game, the girls started strong, which is not typical, he said. They won 25-20 before losing 24-26, 13-25, 10-25.

“I’m proud of the girls,” Brock said. “They did exactly what they needed to do early and took the first set. Chancellor really came alive in the third set and we never got back on track.”

“After we got behind, I think everyone got just a little tense and their team got stronger as the night went on,” he continued.

In the final set, the Lady Indians were down 18-6 and earned a few points after getting back the serve.

“And then when we lost the serve, they just kind of took over,” Brock said. “We knew it would be a battle. When you get to this level, you are playing everyone’s best. I wish them good luck the rest of the way. They are a quality opponent with a good coach.”

In the game, Madeleine Kahle had 10 kills for Southampton. Teammate Madison Cabell added nine kills, two blocks, three digs and went 11-for-11 in serves, while her sister Marisa Cabell had seven kills, two aces and three blocks.

Candace Earls made nine assists, two aces and two blocks and went 11-for-11 in serves, while Kaylee Edwards made four kills and seven digs.

For Chancellor, Shea Sullivan made 22 kills, Allie Reynolds had six aces and 32 assists, Janay Frazier had 16 kills and Kassie Moeller made 17 digs.

Southampton will lose Marisa Cabell, Earls, Claire Cogsdale, Merdie Ellis, Meredith Coggsdale and Jenna Story to graduation.

“I’ll need to replace my middle (player) and then we have two setters coming up from JV,” Brock said.

Although disappointed with Thursday’s loss, the girls accepted it.

“Everyone on the team put in a lot of work and gave everything they had,” he said.
