Marvin J. Ricks Sr.
SUFFOLK—Marvin Jerome Ricks Sr. died Feb. 10, 2009, at Louise Obici Hospital.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife Mary Ricks, brothers Floyd Ricks, Leroy Ricks, Eddie Lee Ricks, sisters Bernice Smith, and Gladys Faltz.
Mr. Ricks was born in Sussex County on Dec. 14, 1949. He was the son of the late Gurnie and Sadie Ricks. Marvin was educated in the Southampton County Public School System.
He was a member of New Mt. Carmel United Holy Church of America in Sedley, where he served on the deacon board. He was very dedicated to his church duties, and also enjoyed playing the bass guitar as we all know.
He was a hard working man; he began working in the meat-packing industry at a young age for H.P. Beale & Sons in Southampton County, and later worked for Gwaltney of Smithfield where he became a supervisor.
Survivors include his sons, Marvin J. Ricks Jr. (Ruchelle) of Suffolk, Sheen Ricks of Norfolk, Keith Ricks of Suffolk; daughter, Kisha Ricks of Suffolk; brothers, George W. Ricks (Rosa) of Courtland, Speedy Ricks (Shirley) of Chesapeake, Bishop Clarence Ricks (Cathy) of Hampton and Bishop Elton Ricks (Beverly) of Roanoke Rapids, N.C.; sister, Clara Turner (Clarence) of Windsor; brothers-in-law, Eddie Banks Newport News, Clinton Banks (Darlene) Newport News, George Banks (Pam) Suffolk, William Banks(Donna) Charlotte, N.C.; sisters-in-law- Lucille Turner Zuni and Judy Eley (Lloyd) Windsor; grandchildren, Courtney Ricks, Cayden Ricks and Timothy Williams Jr. (TJ); and a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
A funeral was held on Tuesday at Beulah Lane AME Zion Church, 34122 Clayton Road, Sedley.
Arrangements were handled by Crocker Funeral Home, Suffolk.
