SUFFOLK—Benjamin Austin Baines, 67, died Feb. 9, 2009, at his home surrounded by his family.
Born in Whaleyville, he was the son of the late Novella A. and Burleigh Edward Baines and was preceded in death by his stepmother, Virginia Felton Baines.
Mr. Baines retired after 39 years of service as a millwright with International Paper and was a member of Great Fork Baptist Church, where he served as trustee for the Great Fork Cemetery.
He was a member of the Whaleyville Ruritan Club, North-South Skirmish Association, the Southampton Greys, Tom Smith Camp of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, Nansemond Hunt Club and Bronco Rod and Gun Club.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy Branch Baines; a son, Shannon Dwight Baines; daughter, Tammy Baines Baughman and husband Erik, all of Suffolk; a sister, Virginia B. Salmon and husband Jack of Portsmouth; brother, E. Darden Baines of Williamsburg; grandchildren, Jonathan, Lauren, Erin and Kayla; a great-grandson, Cayden; nephew, Jack Salmon Jr. and wife Wanda; and a great-nephew, Austin Salmon.
A funeral will be conducted Thursday at 2 p.m. in Great Fork Baptist Church by the Rev. Dr. Donald R. Jones with burial in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends in R.W. Baker & Co.
