George L. Gwaltney III
SUFFOLK—George Lafayette “Spunk” Gwaltney III, 77, died Jan. 27, 2009.
He was born in Suffolk, the son of the late Virginia Mayo Gwaltney and George L. Gwaltney Jr.
Mr. Gwaltney was a veteran having served in the U.S. Coast Guard. He retired from the Virginia Department of Transportation as a highway inspector.
He was also the owner and operator of the Gwaltney Store in Chuckatuck. He was a member of Oakland Christian Church, the American Legion where he served as past commander and Masonic Lodge AF&AM No. 77, where he served as past Master.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Martha V. Gwaltney of Suffolk; daughter and son-in-law, Deborah G. and Wayne C. Renfrow of Virginia Beach; sons and daughter-in-law, George Paul Gwaltney of Windsor and special friend, Kelly McCann, Kent Lee and Carolyn H. Gwaltney of Suffolk; grandchildren, Robert Warren, Leslie Hamrick, and Lindsay Steele; stepgrandsons, Brenan Oliver and Wayne C. Renfrow II; great-grandchild, Emma Caroline Hamrick; aunt and uncle, Eloise and Jack Bailey of Nashville, Tenn.
A graveside service will be held today at 11 a.m. in Newman Memorial Cemetery behind Oakland Christian Church with the Rev. Mark Burns officiating.
