Betty J. Overbey
CHESAPEAKE—Betty Jean Overbey, 75, died Jan. 27, 2009, surrounded by her family at the Home of her daughter.
She was a registered nurse at Riverside Hospital Pediatric Unit before retiring as an assistant professor of nursing at Norfolk State University.
Mrs. Overbey completed her undergraduate work at Thomas Nelson Community College and Hampton University, and continued her graduate education at Hampton University, earning her MSN in psychiatric nursing.
The consummate professional, she was known as a “nurse nurse.” Her community involvement included volunteering for the American Cancer Society, promoting breast cancer awareness and president of the Women’s Auxiliary of the Retired Armed Forces Club, Hampton from 1984-88, where she was involved n fundraisers to give to the needy in the area.
She was predeceased by her parents, Joe and Minnie Flowers; husband, Robert Overbey Sr.; brothers and sisters, Frank, George, Annie, Josephine and Petula.
Survivors include her nine children, Regina Overbey of Hampton, Lawrence M Overbey of Seattle, Wash., Robert Overbey Jr. (Bridgett) of Triangle, Patrick Overbey (Karen) of Suffolk, Derrick Overbey (Sarah) of Newport News, Pamela Overbey-Walker (Allen) of Courtland, Debra Overbey Adebiyi, Janice Overbey (Leon) of Hampton and James Overbey of Triangle; 21 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A celebration of life is scheduled for Friday at 10 a.m. at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Kempsville Road, Virginia Beach, with Bishop Darryl Scott officiating.
Interment will follow at National Cemetery, Hampton. A repast will be held at Les Hommes Social and Civic Club, Hampton.
A viewing will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Cooke Brothers Funeral Chapel, 27th St., Newport News.
Cooke Brothers Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
