Gertrude D. Green
PETERSBURG—Gertrude Davis Green, the daughter of the late Corean Earp and Charlie Haywood, was born May 6, 1915, in Southampton County.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Caleb Green Sr.; one brother, Billie Roy Ellsworth; and four children, Lou Jones, Everlean Jones, Lydia Taylor and John Jasper Green.
Mrs. Green was educated in Southampton County Public School system and received her certification as a nursing assistant in Richmond.
She was a former member of the Eastern Stars, ABC Gospel Chorus and the Starlight Gospel singers for many years.
“Momma Gerty,” as she was affectionately called, was a member of Bethel Star Holiness Church, Joyner and Morning Star Baptist Church, Capron.
She served as a faithful member and was a deaconess in later years.
Survivors include her eight children, Caleb Jr. (Edith) of Hampton, Melvin T. (Cora) of Havelock, N.C., Larry of Philadelphia and Ronald of Emporia, Helen of Brooklyn, N.Y. and Ann Little of Petersburg; two grandchildren whom she adopted, Claudia “Cookie” Threatt and Winston “Tony” Green; 36 grandchildren; a host of great-grandchildren; one son-in-law, Emmett Taylor of Drewryville; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, devoted friends and special caregivers, Wendy and Clesta Williams.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Morning Star Baptist Church, 14502 Rivers Mill Road, Capron, the Rev. Earl Thompson, pastor, officiating.
Interment to follow at the church cemetery.
