COURTLAND—The developer of the Hardee’s in Courtland said Friday the company still plans to build but has set no time frame.

“A new Hardee’s in Courtland remains high on our list for development and we hope to be able to announce something in the near future but I can’t say exactly when,” said Rick Rountree, spokesman for Boddie-Noell Enterprises in Rocky Mount, N.C.

In January 2011, company officials indicated construction of the fast-food restaurant in front of Food Lion on Highway 58 was expected to begin before the end of March. Originally slated to open by the end of June, Hardee’s would create 50 to 60 jobs.

Rountree said the company is busy on other projects.

“This is going on at the same time that we’re making major investments in remodeling a number of our existing Hardee’s locations throughout Virginia and North Carolina,” he said. “But again, development of a Hardee’s in Courtland remains a top priority for us.”

Beth Lewis, director of community development for Southampton County, said Friday the construction plan was approved some time ago. The building permit, however, has not been issued.

Boddie-Noell owns all of the Hardee’s in Virginia, including the restaurants in Franklin and on Route 58 in Emporia and Suffolk.

Boddie-Noell Enterprises is the largest franchiser of Hardee’s restaurants in the world, owning 340, including 229 in Virginia.
