SURRY—The Franklin High School boys’ basketball team will play No. 3 Charles City in the opening round of the Tri-Rivers District Tournament on Friday, Feb. 17, at Surry High School.

The Broncos are ranked No. 2 with an 8-4 district record. Surry is undefeated in the district and ranked No. 1.

“I look forward to seeing our boys lay it on the line,” said Franklin Coach Danny Dillon. “They are hungry, and that’s exactly what you want to be come tournament time.”

Franklin closed its regular season on Friday with a 69-59 loss to Charles City. The Broncos took second in the district; that guarantees them a spot in the Region A tournament, which follows the district tournament.

“We are super excited about being in the playoffs and having a second seed in the Tri-Rivers District tournament,” Dillon said. “We give God glory for all the things that He has allowed us to overcome to get to where we are. These Broncos players are top notch and have been a coach’s dream to coach.”

From Friday, Charles City led 36-32 at halftime.

Adam Grant led all scorers with 23 points and led in assists with seven. Senior Jalen Vincent finished his last regular season game with 15 points.

Charles City’s Antonio Harris scored 18 points.

“The boy’s fought real hard tonight,” Dillon said. “We had to sit our leading scorer Tyshaun Lowe for undisclosed reasons and his presence was definitely missed.”

“With that said, the effort that the five seniors who started put on the floor was excellent,” he continued. “We beat them (earlier in the season) at their place 78-72. They are a good team, but again, whenever you have to change things up in your lineup, it can mess your chemistry, and we were not the same dominate team without Lowe.”
